Bowed, Yet Unbroken

Pripjat

As the whip once again hits the spine
She still can’t feel his wisdom
Holy verses drip from her eyes!

Accused of ancient lies, her faith in his hand
She can not satisfy the thirst of the sand
Purified, each hit like a psalm
She is guilty before them, her pain is her palm

As the wise and mighty gather around
Encircling her like vultures
Breath in the freedom pouring from her mouth
And spit it out as black liquid

Bow down to the wrath of the truth
Bow down to your prophet
Bow down

Her body sacred, so they beat her to death
She dared to love a heretic!
As she watched them cut off his head
She knew: Love was her God and God now was dead

The earth and desert, they’re fading away
Familiar faces smile down from a distance
A hinted smile in the face of decay
Ready to farewell her stricken existence

They might have broken every bone in her body
They ripped the flesh from the bone
But here she rises, pouring light on their shame
They will fall to dust, but we’ll remember her name!

Some day our children will gather
Around the place where she spilled hope

Sometimes we show ourselves worthy
To walk the path that she had gone

Somebody will stop and listen
To the wisdom she has left
Left behind
