I built it on a handshake
On a hum
On a hunch
Sold the parents on the pizza
Sold the children on a punch
Sixteen paper party hats
A floor of sticky glue
And a door inside the blueprint that the blueprint never drew
The papers printed five names, and the papers got it wrong
I stood behind the candles while the mother sang along
They took a thousand pictures of the flowers and the crown
And I'm in every single one, purple blurry, proud
You cornered me in the Safe Room, in a hallway full of eyes
I climbed inside the rabbit, and I watched the ceiling rise
The springlocks did their business, sure it hurt, it's fine
You got thirty years of quiet, I got thirty years of time
So come on little lights
Take a swing, take a shot
I've been sketching inside this rabbit
Since the summer went to riot!
Crossed the crossbars, don't stall, see me to the ghouls
You won't do a fucking thing in the realm of souls!
They rebuilt it as an attraction, sold my ruin as a ride
Strung me up in the floodlights
For a ten-buck souvenir
And the fire found the fusebox and the gas went out the side
I stayed, I like the heat, I like it make things clearer
They swept me up and strapped and swore the story had an end
Poured the bunker full of concrete, poured it solid, poured it deep
But the concrete's just a blanket and the dark's an easy friend
And the thing about the dead is that we never have to sleep
You called it a cremation, I called it a little commotion
I walked out of that parking lot in somebody else's suit
I'm the hitch behind the drywall, I'm the pest beneath the tile
And I have been very patient, and I kept a little smile
So come on little lights
Take a swing, take a shot
I've been sketching inside this rabbit
Since the summer went to riot!
Crossed the crossbars, don't stall, see me to the ghouls
You won't do a fucking thing in the realm of souls!
Go count the owners, count the fires
Count the names above the door
Count the ones who swore they'd end me
Then go count them one time more
Every hero this hallway is a footnote with a light
And I have read them all already, every single one goodnight
You want the part where I get sorry? There's no version where I do
I'd run the whole thing over, and I'd run it faster too
That's the difference in us, you keep begging for a reason
And I keep begging for a building in a quiet little season
Then the little lights start humming and they hum it back at me
Same words, wrong mouth
Colder than the summer used to be
We learned to lose flow, but we learned to cook it low
We stayed when the pain was killing
We stayed and watched the clock
We stayed through every owner
Every buyer, every con
Till the only thing still standing was the man who thought he won!
(He always come back)
So come on little lights
Take a swing, take a shot
I've been sketching inside this rabbit
Since the summer went to riot!
Crossed the crossbars, don't stall, see me to the ghouls
You won't do a fucking thing in the realm of souls!
They'll buy the lot, they'll paint the walls, they'll swear the place is new
They'll hang a smiling rabbit up because the children want them to
So lock it
Turn the deadbolt
Take the long way to your car
I've been on the inside of every door you ever locked so far
