The Continent In Flames

Astrikos Katoikos

From Mexico south to Magellan's Strait
The missing haunt the records of the state
Some vanished under orders from above
Some crossed a border seeking refuge, love

In Santiago, the palace burned that day
The radio sent commands across the bay
The tanks rolled down the avenues at noon
And rifles silenced ballots far too soon

Latin America, remember every scar
Remember what the uniforms became
No nation is the private realm of one
No ruler has the right to own a nation's name

In Buenos Aires, headlights crossed the rain
Then boots came crashing through the door again
A father vanished, leaving only his name
His photograph preserved the vanished frame

Across the Southern Cone, the borders closed
While secret files revealed where power flowed
Operation Condor carried fear abroad
With governments exchanging names of those pursued

Latin America, remember every scar
Remember what the uniforms became
No nation is the private realm of one
No ruler has the right to own a nation's name

In Brazil, the censors blacked the page
And songs were cut beneath the censor's rage
In Uruguay, the prisons swallowed years
While Paraguay was ruled through blood and fears

In Bolivia, the barracks held the state
The rifle stood beside the office gate
The ballot lost its meaning under force
While soldiers steered the government's course

Then came the vocabulary of blame
The foreigner, the traitor, and the shame
The leader wrapped the country in his name
Then called obedience patriotic flame

First came contempt for judges and the press
Then rivals branded enemies of state
Old crimes returned beneath a new address
While law was bent to justify the hate

Beware the flag that asks for blind devotion
The anthem raised to drown a citizen's voice
Beware the hand that promises salvation
Then leaves submission as the only choice

A nation is not barracks, blood, or soil
A uniform confers no sacred right
The State must answer to the people's law
The ruler serves beneath that law's own light

Latin America, remember every name
From Santiago south through years of flame
Remember those whose families waited in vain
Whose photographs grew old beside the pain

Let no caudillo speak for everyone
Let no demagogue make hatred into law
Let every citizen remain a citizen
With rights no government may simply withdraw

For freedom rarely vanishes in one blow
It leaves through little bargains made with fear
A newspaper silenced, then a judge removed
Then one more warning whispered in the ear

And when the missing cease to make the news
When empty chairs no longer cause alarm
The deepest danger is the heart that learns
To call submission safety from afar

From Mexico south to Magellan's Strait
Remember what the graves refuse to state
A republic rarely dies from one decree
It dies when fear becomes democracy's key

And when old slogans return beneath new flags
When hatred dresses itself in national pride
Remember those who vanished without graves
No leader owns the country they divide
